April 1st, at the Vienna International Centre and March 27th at the HQ in New York, two important discussions focussing on “mitigating pollution” were held. The discussion in New York HQ was organized by the General Assembly.
Mr. Levent Eler, Resident Representative, Permanent Mission of Türkiye to the IAEA mentioned the significant challenges we encounter in waste management pertains to the synthetic fibers and textile sector. These topics reflect a growing awareness and commitment to address pollution and foster the creation of a cleaner and healthier world.
Video message by Ms. Emine Erdogan:
Mr. Hua Liu (DDG, IAEA):
Mr. Hua Liu mentioned the NUTEC Plastic Initiative to support countries in addressing global plastic pollution. It is advisable to utilize nuclear science and technology for better understanding and monitoring. The conversion of waste into valuable resources, utilizing electronic beam technology, is paramount. Since 2024, the IAEA has formed strong partnerships with Turkey and Hungary aimed at achieving substantial global waste reduction.
Mr. H.E. Ambassador Ferenc Dancs (Resident Representative, Permanent Mission of Hungary to the IAEA):
Securing a sustainable future for our next generation is crucial for protecting the environment and conserving resources. The HUN – REN Centre for Energy Research is committed to implementing technologies that effectively reduce pollution. By enhancing recycling efficiency and building strong partnerships through innovation, we are confidently paving the way toward a more sustainable future.
Dr. Balazs Madas (DDG, HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research):
Dr. Madas began the event with a lecture showcasing the campus’s beautiful setting in Hungary. Established in 1951, this distinguished institute employs around 450 professionals across fields such as material science, environmental chemistry, space research, nanoengineering, and recycling techniques. Attendees also had the chance to explore the institute’s electronic radiation facility for laboratory-scale irradiations.
Ms. Meng Li (Programme Management Officer, IAEA):
Four key thematic areas have been identified, highlighting the importance of applications in isotope and radiation technologies, as well as environmental monitoring and conservation efforts. Ms. Meng Li took the initiative to organize a seminar in 2024 aimed at fostering awareness regarding the significance of radiation technologies. We are pleased to announce that our next upcoming event will be a regional training course. The IAEA has graciously supported participants’ attendance at the Symposium on Radiation Chemistry in Hungary and the third International Conference on Applications of Radiation Science and Technology. Ms. Li expressed her gratitude for the valuable discussions held today and looks forward to the regional training course scheduled for June.
The IAEA understands the pressing challenges that Member States face in monitoring, assessing, and addressing pollution. Through their technical cooperation projects, they are committed to supporting efforts and enhancing capabilities. Via utilisation the power of nuclear science and technology, we strive to contribute to sustainable development and environmental protection, ensuring a healthier planet for all.
